I am writing to urge you to support the Trade Review Act of 2025, bipartisan legislation introduced by Senators Chuck Grassley and Maria Cantwell that would reinforce Congress's constitutional authority over trade policy and require congressional approval for presidential tariffs. The aggressive tariffs imposed in April on imported goods from most countries have caused significant economic harm to American consumers without delivering the promised benefits to domestic manufacturing. Instead of strengthening our economy, these tariffs have driven inflation to 2.9% in August compared to the previous year, the fastest annual pace since January. Economists warn that inflation will continue to accelerate if these tariffs remain in place. The impact on everyday Americans has been severe. Prices for basic necessities including food, gas, utilities, clothing, and shelter have increased dramatically, with some items rising more than 20%. These are not luxury goods but essentials that families depend on to survive. The frequent changes and reinstatements of tariff policies have created additional confusion and economic turmoil, making it impossible for businesses to plan and forcing consumers to absorb unpredictable cost increases. The Trade Review Act of 2025 represents a commonsense solution that respects the separation of powers while protecting American consumers. By requiring congressional approval for tariffs, this legislation would ensure that trade policy decisions receive proper scrutiny and reflect the interests of constituents rather than executive whim. Congress has the constitutional authority to regulate commerce with foreign nations, and it is time to reclaim that responsibility. I ask that you cosponsor and vote in favor of the Trade Review Act of 2025. American families cannot afford continued inflation driven by tariffs that fail to achieve their stated goals. We need congressional oversight to restore stability to trade policy and protect consumers from rising costs that are straining household budgets across the country.
