Lowering the professional-to-student ratio and hiring more school counselors and nurses is crucial for ensuring students receive adequate support for their mental health and overall well-being. The existing high ratios undermine the ability of these professionals to meet the growing needs of students, families, and schools. With 1 in 5 students experiencing a behavioral or mental health concern requiring intervention, access to counseling services within schools is essential. Funds from the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act should be appropriated to expand the mental health services available by hiring more certified school counselors and nurses. This investment in student support personnel will vastly improve the delivery of mental health services and promote positive school climates conducive to learning and development.
