URGENT CONSTITUTIONAL DEMAND: Vote YES on the Iran War Powers Resolution

To: Sen. Schiff, Rep. Mullin, Sen. Padilla

From: A constituent in Menlo Park, CA

February 22

I am contacting you today with extreme urgency regarding an impending constitutional crisis. As your constituent, I demand that you uphold the rule of law by co-sponsoring and voting YES on the bipartisan Iran War Powers Resolution (S.J.Res.104 in the Senate, led by Sens. Paul and Kaine; and the Massie-Khanna Resolution in the House). America is founded on a strict separation of powers. Article I, Section 8 of the U.S. Constitution unequivocally vests the power to declare war solely in the hands of Congress, not the Executive Branch. We are currently facing the immediate threat of unilateral, unauthorized military strikes against the Islamic Republic of Iran. Bypassing Congress to initiate hostilities is a direct violation of our founding principles and recklessly places American troops at risk without the mandatory consent of the governed. This legislation is fiercely bipartisan because the Constitution is not a partisan document. When lawmakers as ideologically diverse as Senator Rand Paul, Representative Thomas Massie, Senator Tim Kaine, and Representative Ro Khanna unite to force a floor vote, it signals a fundamental defense of our Republic against executive overreach. The rule of law must be absolute. I expect you to reassert your Article I authority, halt any unauthorized march to war, and vote YES. Congress must debate and vote before any hostilities occur.
