I am writing to urge you to take immediate action to stop the Trump administration’s plan to dismantle the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) in Boulder, Colorado. Since 1960, NCAR has been the backbone of American weather and climate science. Every American benefits from NCAR’s critical work: ∙ NCAR develops the models and tools that the National Weather Service, private forecasters, and emergency managers rely on daily ∙ NCAR scientists pioneered dropsondes (instruments dropped into hurricanes) that have revolutionized forecasting and saved countless lives ∙ NCAR developed forecasting systems for microbursts (sudden violent wind gusts) that previously caused fatal airplane crashes during takeoff and landing ∙ NCAR trains the next generation of atmospheric scientists through internships, graduate fellowships, and open-access educational resources The administration’s attack on NCAR as “climate alarmism” and “woke waste” ignores thelab’s essential role in public safety and national security. Dismantling NCAR will make our weather forecasts less accurate, endanger lives during severe weather events, and harm local economies across the country that depend on reliable forecasting. I urge you to publicly oppose this dangerous plan and use your position to protect NCAR’s funding and independence. Climate science saves lives - this is not a political issue, it’s a matter of public safety. Thank you for your attention to this urgent matter.
