I am writing as an Alaskan deeply concerned about escalating U.S. military strikes on Iran. I urge you to support the bipartisan War Powers Resolution to rein in unauthorized military action.
The Constitution is clear. Only Congress has the authority to declare war. Expanding military operations without congressional approval risks pulling our country into another prolonged conflict in the Middle East without a clear objective or public support.
We have lived through this before. The lessons of the Iraq War still weigh heavily on military families and veterans, including many here in Alaska. We should not repeat that mistake.
From an Alaska perspective:
• Many of our neighbors serve in uniform. Unauthorized escalation puts Alaskan service members directly in harm’s way.
• Increased conflict in the Middle East destabilizes global energy markets. While Alaska is an energy state, volatility harms families and small businesses through higher fuel and transportation costs.
• Federal dollars spent on open-ended war efforts are dollars not invested in infrastructure, education, fisheries, disaster response, and veterans services here at home.
What do we gain from regime change rhetoric or unilateral strikes? How does this make Alaska safer?
A war powers resolution is not about weakening America. It is about upholding constitutional balance and ensuring that any decision to go to war reflects deliberation, evidence, and the will of the American people.
Please publicly support and vote for the War Powers Resolution requiring congressional authorization before further military action against Iran.
Alaskans deserve transparency, constitutional governance, and leadership that prioritizes stability over escalation.
