I'm asking you to sign LD 307 into law. This temporary pause on new data center development is exactly what Maine needs to avoid locking ourselves into projects that could devastate our electricity costs and water resources.
Data centers could consume more than one-ninth of the country's total electricity by 2028, according to the Department of Energy. Maine ratepayers shouldn't be forced to subsidize these massive energy demands without understanding the full impact. Projects in other states promised jobs and minimal impact but failed to deliver. We've already seen proposals in Wiscasset and Lewiston fizzle out, and we need time to get this right.
The Data Center Coordination Council will study these facilities' impacts and develop smart policy recommendations by February 2027. This isn't a permanent ban. It's a pragmatic pause that protects ratepayers, maintains grid reliability, and ensures any future development happens in the right places with proper safeguards. The Legislature passed this bill with strong bipartisan support because Mainers understand what's at stake.
Sign LD 307 and give Maine the breathing room to plan data center development responsibly instead of rushing into decisions we'll regret for decades.
