The Anti-Semitism Awareness Act is an unnecessary and potentially harmful bill that threatens free speech on college campuses. Existing federal law already prohibits antisemitic discrimination by federally funded entities. However, this bill incorrectly equates criticism of the Israeli government's policies with antisemitism. This broad and vague definition could chill legitimate free speech and academic freedom by students rightly voicing concerns over human rights violations by the Israeli government against Palestinians. We must reject this misguided attempt to stifle free expression and debate on a crucial issue of public concern. Instead of curtailing constitutional rights, Congress should uphold the First Amendment and oppose the Anti-Semitism Awareness Act.
