Americans should not have to wonder whether the rules for casting their ballots will suddenly change weeks before an election because of an executive order from the President. Yet that is exactly the uncertainty voters and election officials are facing ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. The Trump administration has attempted to impose new federal requirements on mail voting, including new ballot-envelope standards and requirements for states to submit voter information through a federal system. Courts have repeatedly intervened, and a federal judge has now blocked implementation of these requirements for the November election. Regardless of party, this should concern every American. Our elections belong to the people. The rules governing them should be established through lawful, transparent democratic processes—not changed at the last minute by presidential directive. Congress cannot simply stand by while disputes over executive power, federal databases, the Postal Service, and voter eligibility create confusion around an election that is already underway. We call on the Senate to vigorously defend Americans' right to vote and Congress's constitutional role in protecting federal elections. Congress should conduct immediate oversight of federal efforts to alter election administration, protect the Postal Service from being used to obstruct or reject lawful ballots, and prevent inaccurate federal databases from being used to improperly remove eligible Americans from voter rolls. Congress should also establish clear protections against any administration using executive authority to impose sweeping new voting restrictions without congressional authorization. Election security matters. Preventing unlawful voting matters. But neither goal requires making lawful voting harder, creating unnecessary uncertainty for election officials, or risking the rejection of ballots cast by eligible American citizens. The right to vote cannot depend on which political party controls the White House. We expect our senators to defend free and fair elections, the constitutional separation of powers, and every eligible American's ability to cast a ballot and have that ballot counted. Please act now to protect the integrity of the 2026 election and prevent presidential power from being used to interfere with Americans' fundamental right to vote.
