Regulations for AI

To: Sen. Kim, Sen. Booker, Rep. Norcross

As AI becomes more embedded into our American culture, we need to create regulations around what is acceptable for AI to be allowed to do. Why is using AI in a hospital setting okay? Or for mental health? Does AI overrule HIPAA? How do we know that AI can’t share personal medical information if it has been gathered at the doctor’s office? And what about the cost of the data centers that is being passed onto people in the area where the data centers are being built? Why is it not the responsibility of the owner of the data center to pay their own bills? There should be a law that states that any usage charge cannot be passed onto the local residents. This doesn’t even begin to touch onto some of the larger concerns of the race to the bottom attitudes the current AI CEO’s have in their efforts to be the first on the market. There needs to be a level of safety build into the software. Those CEO’s need to be held accountable when their AI’s go rogue or are used in a way to harm others (I’m thinking of apps like nudify here). There should be a level of safety that people should expect. That if they post a picture to Instagram, it’s not going to be used nefariously by someone else whether they be an ex-husband or boyfriend/girlfriend, classmate, etc. people need to be protected. I know there are data centers being built in NJ, but I’m looking for more regulations on a national level. I hope I can count on you to work together to understand this issue and create regulations around AI.
