Ballot reading level

To: Sen. Hagenbuch, Rep. Shaheen

From: A constituent in Frisco, TX

November 14

This past election on the 17 Texas Constitutional Amendments was a challenge for many voters. The amendments were written with words that voters did not understand. “Ad valorem” was one of the challenging adjectives that was used in multiple amendments. Voters had to pause their voting so they could go outside the Poll to research what “ad valorem” was. Voters told us they had to read the amendments multiple times to try and understand them. This created long lines because it took voters a long time to vote. I am requesting you create a law that states ALL amendments or propositions on ballots be written at a 5th grade reading level. Texas shows a lower-than-average literacy rate and is sometimes cited as having one of the lowest.
