Upholding the integrity of elections and protecting the fundamental right to vote are crucial for maintaining a healthy democracy. The Supreme Court's decision to reinstate the removal of over 1,600 voter registrations in Virginia so close to the upcoming election is deeply concerning. While safeguarding against ineligible voting is important, the state has provided scant evidence that these registrations belong to non-citizens, and some have already been confirmed as eligible voters. Purging voter rolls based on flawed data and assumptions risks disenfranchising lawful citizens. Moreover, this ruling appears to violate the National Voter Registration Act's "quiet period" provision, designed to prevent systematic voter removals in the 90 days leading up to an election when it may be too late for impacted individuals to rectify issues with their registration. Circumventing such protections undermines faith in the electoral process and sets a troubling precedent. I urge you to support legislation strengthening voting rights protections and establishing robust standards for any attempts to remove registered voters from the rolls. Ensuring all eligible citizens can freely exercise their constitutional right to vote should be a non-partisan priority. Our democracy depends on secure, accessible, and credible elections where every valid vote is counted.
