Thank you for taking the time to read my letter today. I want to thank you for stepping into the shoes of Joe Biden in this crucial election. I am an independent voter in Southern West Virginia. I grew up deep in the coal fields of Fayette County, half a mile from a coal mine explosion site that killed many workers in the early 1900s. I am writing you today because as an Appalachian woman, I believe there are some policies you should push as President of these United States. In my area, access to healthcare is a major issue, both financially and availability wise. West Virginia is a one of the most poverty stricken states in the union, and we have an aging population. Most of these folks live on fixed incomes, and do not have the means to visit the doctor due to fear of a large bill. Even with Medicare, there are still financial issues that they face. The issue is compounded with the fact that we do not have access to a lot of hospitals or clinics. People in rural areas often have to drive an hour or two to their closest hospital. It is a huge problem for our state, and other rural populations all over the county. I encourage you to write a policy that pushes universal healthcare to the forefront, and to provide funds for states like West Virginia to build more hospitals and health care clinics. Secondly, I believe that using your executive powers as President to overturn student loan debt is a necessary step. Between the two of us, my husband and I are burdened with around $100k of student loan debt that we currently expect to die with. We have held off on having children due to this, and honestly have put a good majority of our lives on hold due to this. Lastly, I would like to discuss a policy to introduce automatic tax filing for the citizens of the US. We are one of the few first world countries that do not have this in place. It is crucial to the future of this country to introduce this. Younger generations are faced with more anxiety and depression than ever before, and this would be one step in the process to alleviate some of those issues. It would also alleviate some of the issues of adults caring for their aging parents who might not provide the correct information. It would allow for much more accurate filing, and get rid of the issue of people trying to "cheat" their taxes. Thank you again, and good luck with defeating Donald Trump in November.
