Stop the Campaign Against Muslim Texans' Religious Accommodations

To: Lt. Gov. Patrick, Rep. Meyer, Gov. Abbott, Sen. Johnson

From: A constituent in Dallas, TX

August 17

Stop your campaign to strip Muslim Texans of basic religious accommodations at our public airports. You threatened to pull state and federal funding from DFW and Houston's George Bush Intercontinental Airport over ablution facilities — foot-washing stations used by Muslim travelers before prayer. DFW canceled its planned facility almost immediately after your threat. That's government coercion working exactly as intended, and it's wrong. Houston Mayor Whitmire confirmed that IAH's ablution room was paid for entirely through international airline fees — not taxes, not grants — and it's open to people of all faiths. You claim these facilities unconstitutionally single out one subset of the population, yet Texas SB 10 mandates the King James version of the Ten Commandments be posted in every public school classroom, explicitly favoring one religious tradition. How do you justify that hypocrisy? This follows your threats to ban halal foods, restrict the wearing of hijabs, and block professional licensure for our Muslim neighbors. This pattern of religious intolerance is unacceptable and violates the values this country was founded on. Muslim Texans deserve the same dignity and accommodation at public facilities that every other traveler receives. Stop using your funding authority as a weapon against one religious community.
