Oppose the SAVE America Act and Protect Voting Access

To: Sen. Fetterman, Sen. McCormick

From: A constituent in Lancaster, PA

February 20

I am writing to urge you to oppose the SAVE America Act and protect voting rights for all eligible Americans. This legislation, which has already passed the House and now faces a Senate vote, would create unnecessary barriers that disenfranchise millions of legitimate voters. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has correctly identified this bill as designed to make voting so difficult that more than 20 million legitimate people, mainly those with lower incomes and people of color, will lose their ability to vote. The requirement to show proof of citizenship in person when registering, along with mandating photo ID for all voting including by mail, creates insurmountable obstacles for Americans who lack ready access to birth certificates or passports. While proponents like Sen. Susan Collins claim these are simple reforms comparable to showing ID at airports, this comparison ignores a fundamental difference: voting is a constitutional right, not a commercial transaction. Many eligible citizens, particularly elderly Americans born at home, naturalized citizens who have lost documentation, and those who cannot afford the time or money to obtain these documents, would effectively lose their franchise. The bill's sponsor, Sen. Mike Lee, has framed this as existential legislation to "save the republic," but the real threat to our democracy comes from making it harder for eligible Americans to exercise their constitutional rights. States already have systems to verify voter eligibility, and study after study has shown that voter fraud is exceedingly rare. I ask that you stand firmly against the SAVE America Act and any attempt to eliminate the filibuster to pass it. If this bill comes to a vote, please vote no and use every procedural tool available to protect the voting rights of all eligible Americans. Our democracy depends on expanding access to the ballot box, not restricting it.
