McCook’s Community Hospital announced Wednesday that it is closing due to financial challenges, including anticipated Medicaid cuts. In case you’re not aware, Curtis is a Nebraska town of about 900 people. You know, the state that you represent. The Curtis Medical Center has been in operation for more than 30 years. “Unfortunately, the current financial environment, driven by anticipated federal budget cuts to Medicaid, has made it impossible for us to continue operating all of our services, many of which have faced significant financial challenges for years,” Community Hospital CEO Troy Bruntz said in a statement. The clinic will wind down its services over the coming months. You did this. No matter your excuses or justification or deflections or eye rolling. This is your fault. Your vote was a nail in the coffin for the happiness, stability and financial stability of lower and middle-income Nebraskans. You do not serve Nebraskans. You do not care about Curtis or Albion or Bellevue or Broken Bow or Omaha or North Platte or Rulo. You certainly do not care about children on Medicaid (like my 13-year-old son was until last year due to his cancer diagnosis). You don’t care about grandmas in nursing homes. Or the homeless or veterans. Or single parents. Or foster children. Or anyone else who is eligible for Medicaid or SNAP. It’s crystal clear that we don’t matter to you. We’re just a means to an end, helping you feel powerful, pander political favors and grow richer. I realize this will go unanswered. Because you don’t care. But it’s important for me - as a mother, wife and cancer survivor - to tell you how deeply disturbed and disappointed I am with your feckless vote. You can sit comfortably with your title and your wealth and your influence. But it rings hollow in light of your disloyalty to the people who elected you.
