I am writing you today to urge you to continue to support a fair and equitable two-state solution in Israel/Palestine. As a Jew with many connections to the State of Israel, I was horrified by the Hamas invasion on Oct. 7, 2023; I have been further horrified by the disproportionate military actions - some of which surely qualify as war crimes - taken by the Netanyahu government in Gaza (and the West Bank and Lebanon) in the 16 months since. The entire situation is horrific. However, President Trump’s comments today that the Palestinian people have “no choice” but to leave Gaza is unacceptable for anyone representing the United States. It is clear that the only path to long term peace in the Middle East involves a negotiated settlement between the parties that takes Palestinian claims seriously and fairly. President Trump’s comments do not help; they will make it much more difficult to achieve that much-needed settlement. Please take any and all possible action to reinforce the United States government’s historical position that the only acceptable solution to the Middle East conflict is one that treats both parties with dignity and fairness, and to reject President Trump’s radical and unhelpful comments today.
