An Open Letter

To: Rep. Self, Sen. Cruz, Sen. Cornyn

From: A constituent in Princeton, TX

April 7

The Department of Justice has a solemn duty to uphold the Constitution and the rule of law, not blindly follow any administration's partisan agenda. The concerning case of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a legal permanent resident wrongfully deported to the notoriously dangerous El Salvador despite an immigration judge's order preventing his removal, highlights a disturbing breakdown in the DOJ's commitment to principles over politics. DOJ attorneys must be able to zealously advocate for their clients without fear of reprisal for putting the law above loyalty to the president. The government's inability to provide any legal justification for Mr. Abrego Garcia's arrest, detention, and deportation is unacceptable. The court has rightfully ordered his immediate return, a ruling the DOJ should respect and facilitate rather than fight. The DOJ's mission is to pursue justice impartially, not serve as a rubberstamp for unconstitutional overreach by the executive branch. Upholding the rule of law and human rights must take precedence over any administration's misguided policies or personal whims.
