Why Are You Not Standing Up for Your Constituents?

To: Sen. Schmitt, Sen. Hawley

From: A verified voter in Kansas City, MO

March 14

I am writing to ask a very direct question: why are you not standing up for the people you were elected to represent? This administration has systematically dismantled many of the institutions and safeguards that once made this country strong, and yet you and others in Congress continue to stand by while it happens. Your constituents are watching federal agencies be weakened, public servants attacked, and basic standards of accountability ignored. Where is the leadership we were promised? One particularly alarming issue is the continued misconduct surrounding the handling of the Epstein files by Pam Bondi. The public deserves transparency and accountability when it comes to matters involving powerful individuals and potential criminal activity. When officials appear to evade the law or manipulate investigations, Congress has a duty to step in and demand answers. Why has that not happened? At the same time, Russell Vought continues to inflict serious damage on federal agencies and the people who work within them. Career civil servants are being undermined and targeted, even though they are the backbone of the government services that Americans rely on every day. These attacks weaken our government’s ability to function and ultimately harm the very constituents you are supposed to protect. Congress exists to serve as a check on executive power and to defend the interests of the American people. Right now, it feels as though many members of Congress have abandoned that responsibility. Your constituents expect courage, oversight, and accountability—not silence. If elected officials refuse to speak up when laws are broken and institutions are dismantled, then the public will understandably question whether they are truly being represented. I urge you to start doing the job you were elected to do: hold this administration and its officials accountable, defend federal employees, and stand up for the rule of law. The people you represent are paying attention, and they deserve better.
