Seek Peace at Home: End Nuclear Arms, Trident Expansion, and Space Weaponization
To: Sen. Reed, Sen. Whitehouse, Rep. Magaziner
From: A constituent in Warwick, RI
July 9
I am writing to urge you to adopt a national security policy grounded in a simple but essential principle: peace must begin at home. The United States cannot credibly promote peace, human dignity, and international stability while continuing to invest extraordinary public resources in weapons capable of destroying human civilization and permanently damaging the ecological systems upon which all life depends. I ask Congress to support the gradual, verifiable, and internationally coordinated abolition of the United States’ nuclear arsenal. Nuclear weapons do not provide meaningful security when their use, or even an accident, miscalculation, cyberattack, or unauthorized launch, could cause catastrophic loss of life. Their continued existence encourages proliferation, intensifies geopolitical distrust, and diverts funding from education, health care, housing, climate resilience, public infrastructure, and other foundations of genuine national strength. I also urge you to resist further development and expansion of the Trident nuclear weapons program. Modernizing submarine-launched nuclear weapons perpetuates an arms race that the world urgently needs to end. Congress should reject policies that treat increasingly sophisticated nuclear weapons as routine instruments of defense and instead invest in diplomacy, arms control agreements, verification systems, conflict prevention, and cooperative international security. In addition, I ask Congress to oppose the placement, development, or use of weapons in space that could harm life on Earth. Space should remain a shared domain for peaceful scientific research, communication, environmental observation, navigation, and international cooperation. The weaponization of space risks accelerating military competition, creating dangerous debris, threatening civilian infrastructure, and introducing new pathways toward global conflict. No nation should develop orbital or space based weapons capable of causing mass destruction, disabling essential systems, or inflicting irreversible environmental harm. Peace at home also requires confronting the conditions that produce insecurity within our own communities. A nation committed to peace should ensure that its people have access to food, shelter, education, health care, clean air, clean water, and meaningful democratic participation. Security should be measured not only by military capacity, but by whether children are safe, families are supported, communities are resilient, and future generations can inherit a livable planet. I respectfully ask you to: 1 Support legislation establishing a clear pathway toward verifiable nuclear disarmament. 2 Oppose additional funding for the expansion or modernization of the Trident nuclear weapons program. 3 Strengthen and renew international arms control and nonproliferation agreements. 4 Prohibit the development and deployment of weapons of mass destruction in space. 5 Redirect a meaningful portion of nuclear and space weapons spending toward diplomacy, climate resilience, education, health care, infrastructure, and community well-being. 6 Promote international agreements preserving space for peaceful, scientific, and humanitarian purposes. The pursuit of peace is not a sign of weakness. It requires political courage, moral clarity, disciplined diplomacy, and a willingness to imagine security beyond domination and deterrence. Congress has both the authority and the responsibility to move the United States away from weapons that threaten all life and toward policies that protect human beings, democratic institutions, and the Earth itself. Please act with urgency to reduce the nuclear danger, resist the militarization of space, and place peace, at home and throughout the world , at the center of American public policy.
