Subject: Please Act to Protect Mohamad Hamad’s Constitutional Rights and End His Prolonged Pretrial Detention Dear Representative/Senator, Please act to protect the constitutional rights of 24-year-old Lebanese-American student activist Mohamad Hamad of Pennsylvania, who has spent more than a year in federal pretrial detention without trial. I am not asking Congress to determine his guilt or innocence. I am asking you to ensure that he receives due process, competent counsel, and a genuinely fair opportunity to defend himself. Hamad reports that during his detention proceedings, prosecutors and the judge referred to him as “Mr. Hamas,” while his lawyers remained silent. If accurate, this is deeply troubling. A defendant should not be prejudicially labeled by association with an organization before a jury has determined the facts. Hamad also says that extensive surveillance and his continued detention have made it extremely difficult to prepare his defense. The government has brought serious charges against him. Those allegations must be adjudicated through the courts—but constitutional protections must apply precisely when accusations are serious and politically controversial. Please demand answers from the DOJ regarding Hamad’s prolonged detention, access to confidential counsel, adequacy of his legal representation, and the reported courtroom language. America must have one standard of justice for everyone, regardless of political beliefs, religion, ethnicity, or support for Palestine. Please act now to ensure Mohamad Hamad receives the due process guaranteed to every person in America.
