Extend ACA tax credits and open the government
To: Sen. Cornyn, Sen. Cruz
From: A constituent in San Antonio, TX
October 13, 2025
I am writing as your constituent to urge you to oppose the Senate’s budget reconciliation bill. The AFL‑CIO has issued a legislative alert opposing this bill because of the serious harm it would do to working families, our safety net, and our communities. Why this bill must be rejected as is: - Regressive Tax Cuts: The proposal gives the vast majority of benefits to the wealthiest households. According to the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy, 69% of the net tax cuts under this bill would go to the richest 20%, while less than 1% would go to the poorest 20%. - Damage to Health Care Access and Affordability: The bill would make deep cuts to Medicaid, allow enhanced ACA premium tax credits to expire, and impose onerous work reporting requirements and red tape on health care beneficiaries. These changes are projected to cause nearly 16 million people to lose health coverage. Employers and insured individuals would also face higher premiums. - Cuts to Food Assistance (SNAP): The measure would slash SNAP benefits in order to help finance tax cuts for the wealthy. Millions of people—including many who are working—could lose access to food assistance. The cutbacks would also have negative ripple effects for jobs in food processing, retail, school meal programs, and more. - Harm to Jobs, Communities, and Essential Services: Sectors like health care, construction, renewable energy, and others could see job losses as the bill cuts funding, reduces demand, or undercuts incentives. Rural and underserved areas especially could suffer closures of health facilities or loss of essential care. - Unfair Treatment of Immigrants and Undocumented Workers: Some provisions penalize lawfully present immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers, and strip benefits or protections in ways that harm U.S. citizen children. These measures undermine fairness and human dignity. What I urge you to do instead: - Vote against the current reconciliation bill unless it is substantially amended to preserve and strengthen Medicaid, ACA protections, SNAP benefits, and other essential programs. - Ensure that tax policy is progressive, so that the burden is not shifted onto working and middle‑income Americans while the wealthiest benefit the most. - Avoid hasty processes or last‑minute changes without thorough debate and meaningful public input. Legislation affecting people’s health, well‑being, and economic security deserves careful consideration. - Support policies that protect workers, safeguard benefits, and maintain or expand access to health care, food security, and other essentials. As someone who cares deeply about the well‑being of our communities, I believe we deserve a budget that lifts up all people—especially those who are most vulnerable—not one that prioritizes the wealthy at everyone else’s expense.
