I am writing to express my strong opposition to SB132, which seeks to criminalize Delta-8 THC products in Alabama. This bill will have significant negative consequences for many law-abiding citizens who rely on these products for anxiety relief, pain management, and overall well-being. Additionally, this legislation will place an unnecessary burden on law enforcement agencies, making enforcement difficult and diverting resources from more pressing public safety concerns.
Many individuals, including veterans, chronic pain sufferers, and those with anxiety disorders, have found relief in Delta-8 THC products as a legal and accessible alternative to pharmaceutical medications. By criminalizing these products, the state will force many to seek less regulated or potentially illicit alternatives, increasing risks for consumers and complicating public health efforts.
Furthermore, this bill creates significant enforcement challenges. Identifying and distinguishing Delta-8 THC products from other legal hemp-derived products will be extremely difficult for law enforcement officers, requiring new testing protocols and training. This adds unnecessary complications to policing while straining already limited resources.
Instead of an outright ban, I urge you to consider a more measured approach, such as regulation and quality control measures to ensure consumer safety. The hemp industry provides jobs and economic benefits to our state, and a ban would harm small businesses that operate legally and responsibly.
I strongly urge you to vote against SB132 and support policies that protect personal freedoms, responsible business practices, and the well-being of Alabama residents. I appreciate your time and consideration on this matter and look forward to your response.
