Demand Immediate Investigation Into Destruction of USAID Emergency Food Aid

To: Sen. Padilla, Rep. Carbajal, Sen. Schiff

From: A verified voter in Lompoc, CA

July 16

I am writing to demand that you immediately initiate an investigation into the Trump administration’s deliberate destruction of over 500 metric tons of emergency food aid — enough to feed 1.5 million children — ordered to be incinerated instead of delivered to starving populations in crisis zones like Afghanistan and Pakistan. The Atlantic has reported that USAID purchased this $800,000 shipment of high-energy biscuits under the previous administration. Due to an imposed freeze on foreign aid and the dismantling of USAID’s operational capacity, this critical resource was left to expire, costing taxpayers an additional $130,000 just to burn it. This is not just wasteful — it is morally reprehensible and a disgrace to our national values. There is no legitimate excuse for destroying life-saving aid purchased with public funds, especially while famine and displacement devastate vulnerable populations. I urge you to: 1. Subpoena USAID and State Department officials responsible for this decision. 2. Demand a GAO investigation into the policies and personnel that enabled this waste. 3. Introduce or support legislation that prevents political manipulation of humanitarian aid. 4. Hold public hearings so the American people can witness this administration’s gross negligence. The world is watching. If Congress cannot or will not act to stop this, it signals that there is no line this administration cannot cross without consequence. I expect your office to make this a priority and to publicly call for accountability.
