I am a mother of two school-age children, a teacher, and a proud member of my community in Waukesha, Wisconsin. I am extremely concerned about reports of reductions and omissions to the State Department's annual reports on human rights.
For years, these reports have served as major insight into critical rights issues around the world and have been respected as a nonpartisan assessment that could be used to make decisions of policy, business, and more.
The current administration appears to be erasing multiple types of rights abuses from this document -- prison conditions, restrictions on due process, election abuses, and sexual exploitation of women and children among them -- as well as containing less data and instances of any abuses across the board.
All of these issues are at the core of human rights and should be put under the lens of scrutiny. This should not shift from president to president, dependent on political and personal ideologies.
Diminishing these reports not only continues to lower America's credibility and status among the nations of the world, which has already been fractured tremendously in the last months, but it sets the stage to allow more and more human rights restrictions here in America.
Speak up today and demand that these reports remain detailed, exhaustive, and free from partisan agendas. Speak up to protect the human rights that our nation should guard and promote, every day, with every decision we make. Thank you for all you do to safeguard the rights of us here in Wisconsin who voted for you and trust you.
