Social Security Disability Benefits

To: V.P. Harris

From: A constituent in Kingsport, TN

September 26

I have been disabled over 20 years and have been on SS Disability since 2000. My benefits are based on the salary I had at that time. Like the majority of people on SS and SS Disability I live only on those benefits. But there has never been an adjustment of any kind to the base pay, other than regular COLAs. I know millions of Americans in my position would greatly benefit from an adjustment of their base pay. For example, after someone is disabled over 10-15 years they could receive a one-time adjustment of their base salary. Then again every 5 years. This would be more helpful to individuals who are on long term disability versus not paying taxes on benefits. The fact is we don’t get any help from zero taxes because the majority don’t pay much or any taxes to begin with. But if there could be an adjustment in the base pay to those on long term disability it would help lift a lot of disabled and seniors out of poverty. I hope you can consider this as so many millions of us are living solely on SS Disability benefits that haven’t kept up with costs of living. Thank you for your consideration.
