This Is a Direct Attack on American Consumers
To: Sen. Schmitt, Sen. Hawley
From: A verified voter in Kansas City, MO
April 3
I am writing to express my outrage over the effort to slash the workforce of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau by roughly two thirds.
This is a horrible idea. It is not reform. It is not efficiency. It is a direct attack on everyday Americans.
The CFPB exists for one reason: to protect people from fraud, predatory lending, and financial abuse. Cutting the majority of its enforcement and supervision staff does not make it more effective. It makes it incapable of doing its job. That means fewer investigations, less oversight, and more opportunities for bad actors to take advantage of working families.
Let’s be honest about who this helps. It does not help your constituents. It helps corporations and financial institutions that would prefer less accountability and weaker enforcement.
Courts are already scrutinizing whether this plan is even legal. That should be a red flag to anyone who takes their oath of office seriously. Congress created this agency for a reason, and allowing it to be gutted undermines both its mission and the rule of law.
You were elected to represent the people, not to stand by while protections for consumers are dismantled. I expect you to oppose this effort publicly and take concrete action to defend the CFPB.
I want a clear answer: do you support this harmful and reckless decision, or will you stand up for the people you represent?
I will be watching your response closely.
