“Congress must act swiftly to limit the unprecedented and unacceptable level of access granted to Elon Musk and his associates through the so-called "Department of Government Efficiency" initiative. This program has enabled unauthorized individuals to access vast troves of highly sensitive government data, including private financial information and social security records, without adequate oversight or justification. Such overreach not only jeopardizes the privacy and security of American citizens but also undermines the checks and balances fundamental to our democratic system. The attorneys general of 12 states, including New York, have rightly challenged this unlawful breach, asserting that the president lacks the authority to indiscriminately disseminate confidential data or circumvent congressionally approved federal funding allocations. However, a coordinated response from Congress is imperative to uphold transparency, data protection, and the separation of powers enshrined in our Constitution. Decisive legislative action must be taken to terminate this misguided program, restore proper information safeguards, and implement robust accountability measures to prevent any future abuse of executive authority that compromises the integrity of our government systems and the trust of the American people.
The rule of law and the sanctity of our institutions demand no less.”
