Permit Ukraine to strike Russian military targets
To: Rep. Lynch
From: A constituent in West Bridgewater, MA
September 8
It is crucial that Ukraine be permitted to strike all legitimate military targets in Russia in order to defend itself effectively against the ongoing Russian aggression. The arbitrary restrictions placed on the use of long-range missiles like ATACMS are hindering Ukraine's ability to disrupt Russia's military capabilities and operations near the border. By preventing strikes on key military targets such as air bases and armored vehicle assembly sites, the current policy inadvertently aids Russia in concentrating its forces for attacks on Ukraine. As outlined, Ukraine cannot indefinitely rely solely on defensive measures against Russian airstrikes and missile attacks. Striking the sources of these attacks, such as airfields and drone factories within range, would significantly bolster Ukraine's air defense capabilities. Furthermore, forcing Russia to divert resources to defend its own territory would alleviate pressure on the front lines, creating opportunities for Ukrainian advances. The fear of escalation cited as justification for these restrictions is overstated. Ukraine is already striking targets in Russian-occupied Crimea using U.S.-supplied weapons without prompting a wider escalation from Russia. Failing to provide Ukraine with the means to defend itself more effectively only serves to prolong the conflict and enable further Russian atrocities. In the interest of supporting Ukraine's self-defense and hastening the end of this unprovoked war, the White House must lift all restrictions and allow Ukraine to strike legitimate Russian military targets with the weapons and aid provided by the United States. This is not only a moral imperative but also aligned with the intent expressed by Congress.
