Constituent Concern: The SAVE Act Threatens Voting Rights

To: Sen. Wyden, Rep. Hoyle, Sen. Merkley

From: A constituent in Philomath, OR

April 8

I am writing as a concerned constituent to express my strong opposition to the recently introduced SAVE Act (Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act). While I understand the importance of maintaining the integrity of our elections, I believe this legislation is both unnecessary and potentially harmful to the democratic process. Our current voter registration systems already include safeguards to ensure that only eligible U.S. citizens can vote. There is no credible evidence of widespread non-citizen voting that would justify the measures proposed in the SAVE Act. Instead, this bill risks disenfranchising countless eligible voters, particularly naturalized citizens and others who may face challenges obtaining or presenting specific forms of documentation. Rather than protecting elections, the SAVE Act seems more likely to suppress voter participation and create new barriers to the ballot box. Voting is a fundamental right, and we should be working to make it more accessible—not less. I urge you to stand up for fair and inclusive elections by opposing the SAVE Act. Please protect the rights of all eligible voters in our state and reject legislation that undermines the democratic values we hold dear.
