The recent actions by Elon Musk's team at the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) to lock out career civil servants from computer systems containing personal data of millions of federal employees raise grave concerns about cybersecurity risks and lack of oversight. This not only threatens the privacy of federal workers but also contractors and the American public whose information is stored in these systems. Federal employees dedicate themselves to serving the nation, often under difficult circumstances and with modest compensation. They should not have to live in fear of their personal information being compromised or face an unsafe work environment. Stripping access from experienced personnel increases vulnerabilities and creates an unacceptable situation. Immediate steps must be taken to restore access to authorized personnel and implement robust safeguards to protect the troves of sensitive data under OPM's stewardship. The administration's actions undermine public trust and put hardworking Americans at risk of identity theft and other harmful consequences. Protecting the privacy rights and dignity of the federal workforce should be a paramount priority. Decisive leadership is needed to resolve this disturbing breach and prevent further violations from occurring.
