Immigration Judges

To: Sen. Padilla, Rep. Bera, Sen. Schiff

From: A constituent in Sacramento, CA

February 26

I am writing to express my deep concern regarding the recent dismissal of 20 immigration judges by the Trump administration, as reported by News From The States. This action, which includes the termination of 13 judges who had completed their training but had not yet been sworn in, as well as seven assistant chief immigration judges, comes at a time when our immigration courts are already overwhelmed with a backlog exceeding 3.7 million cases. The removal of these judges without clear justification not only exacerbates the existing backlog but also undermines the efficiency and fairness of our immigration system. Immigration judges play a crucial role in adjudicating asylum claims and issuing removal orders, and their sudden dismissal raises questions about the administration's commitment to due process and the rule of law. Moreover, the lack of transparency surrounding these firings has been criticized by union officials, who suggest that this may be part of a broader campaign targeting federal employees. Such actions could have far-reaching implications for the morale and independence of our judiciary. In light of these developments, I urge you to advocate for the immediate reinstatement of the dismissed judges and to support measures that enhance the capacity and independence of our immigration courts. Ensuring a fair and efficient adjudication process is essential to upholding the principles of justice and due process that are foundational to our nation.
