Support SJR F to Protect Marriage Equality in Michigan
To: Sen. McCann
From: A verified voter in Kalamazoo, MI
November 13
I am writing to urge your support for Senate Joint Resolution F, introduced by State Senator Jeremy Moss. This critical legislation would allow Michigan voters to decide on removing the outdated same-sex marriage ban from our state constitution. As the U.S. Supreme Court prepares to review a case challenging the 2015 Obergefell v. Hodges decision, it is imperative that we take proactive steps to protect marriage equality in Michigan.
Our state's same-sex marriage ban, approved over two decades ago, remains in our constitution despite being rendered unconstitutional by Obergefell. If the Supreme Court were to overturn this landmark decision, Michigan's ban would immediately resume, preventing new same-sex marriages in our state. While the 2022 Respect for Marriage Act offers some protection for existing marriages, it would not prevent Michigan's ban from taking effect for future unions.
The consequences of inaction could be severe. Thousands of Michigan families could face legal uncertainty and discrimination if we fail to act now. By supporting SJR F, you have the opportunity to affirm that all Michiganders, regardless of sexual orientation, deserve equal rights and protections under the law.
This resolution has garnered support from key figures like Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel, demonstrating its importance and broad appeal. As a legislator, you have the power to help place this crucial issue on the ballot, allowing voters to align our constitution with our values of equality and fairness.
I respectfully ask that you vote in favor of Senate Joint Resolution F when it comes before you. Your support will be a significant step towards ensuring that Michigan remains a state where all loving couples can enjoy the rights and responsibilities of marriage, regardless of what happens at the federal level. The time to act is now – let's not wait for a potential crisis to protect the rights of our fellow citizens.
