I am writing as a constituent from Pocahontas to respectfully express my strong opposition to the proposed legislation that would remove affirmative action references from Iowa law and eliminate annual police training on de-escalation and bias prevention.
Affirmative action and intentional efforts to promote equity in state employment and education are not unnecessary or symbolic policies — they are important tools for addressing persistent disparities in opportunity. Removing these provisions would roll back progress and signal that Iowa is stepping away from its responsibility to actively counter discrimination.
I am also deeply concerned about eliminating required law enforcement training on de-escalation and bias prevention. These trainings are widely recognized as improving public safety for both officers and community members. They help reduce unnecessary use of force, encourage professionalism, and strengthen trust between law enforcement and the people they serve. Weakening these standards puts communities at greater risk and undermines confidence in policing.
Many Iowans across the state have voiced opposition to this bill because it threatens fairness, accountability, and equal treatment under the law. For communities like ours, these policies have real-world impacts on safety, opportunity, and trust in government institutions.
I urge you to oppose this bill and instead support legislation that promotes equal opportunity and ensures law enforcement officers are equipped to serve all Iowans with fairness and respect.
Thank you for your time and for representing our district. I would appreciate knowing your position on this issue.
