Demand Investigation Into Venezuelan Oil Sale Corruption

To: Sen. Husted, Sen. Moreno, Rep. Landsman

From: A constituent in Lebanon, OH

January 20

I am writing to urge you to investigate and take immediate action against what appears to be blatant corruption in the Trump administration's handling of Venezuelan oil sales. The approximately $250 million sale of Venezuelan crude oil to Vitol, a Geneva-based energy trading firm, raises serious legal and ethical concerns that demand congressional oversight. John Addison, a senior trader at Vitol who secured this deal, donated $6 million to Trump's 2024 presidential campaign, including $5 million to MAGA Inc. According to the Financial Times, Addison attended a recent White House meeting where he pledged to Trump that Vitol would obtain the best price possible for Venezuelan oil to ensure Trump gets what he wants from Venezuela. This appears to be a direct quid pro quo arrangement where a major campaign donor receives lucrative government contracts. The corruption extends beyond this single transaction. Vitol has a documented criminal history of bribing foreign governments. Meanwhile, proceeds from these oil sales are being held in Qatar rather than through transparent US banking channels, creating what Senator Cory Booker accurately described as a potential slush fund with no accountability, oversight, or guardrails. Additionally, hedge fund billionaire Paul Singer's Elliott Investment Management is acquiring Citgo, which owns refineries in Illinois, Louisiana, and Texas specifically equipped to process Venezuelan heavy crude, positioning well-connected investors to profit enormously. This arrangement does not serve American interests or lower costs for American families. It enriches Trump campaign donors while circumventing normal oversight mechanisms. I urge you to demand a full investigation by the appropriate congressional committees, subpoena all communications between Trump administration officials and Vitol executives, and introduce legislation requiring transparent handling of any seized foreign assets. The American people deserve accountability, not a pay-to-play scheme that benefits billionaire donors.
