An Open Letter

To: Sen. Durazo, Gov. Newsom, Asm. González

From: A constituent in Los Angeles, CA

May 22

To take people from their families, hold them in detention centers, and then have those same detention centers have such deplorable conditions — this is NOT what California stand for. We are hold ourselves to a higher standard and tell the rest of the country to look to us as an example of how you should be and how you should treat others. The desert view annex in Adelanto, California has people in such horrible conditions that they are holding a hunger strike. This is an embarrassment to our state that we are not holding this private company, responsible for how they treat our citizens and immigrants — illegal or otherwise. Hold the company that runs the desert view annex in Adelanto, California responsible for the conditions that they are keeping people in. Run an audit of all detention centers to make sure that we are holding ourselves accountable to the standard that we set for ourselves and others.
