Vote no on S. 4925, the so-called "Stop the Sexualization of Children Act," and oppose the companion House bills HR 7661, HR 2616, and HR 8705. These bills don't protect children — they strip schools of federal funding for teaching students that LGBTQ+ people exist and that history includes more than one kind of person.
S. 4925 is particularly cynical in its design. It defines "classic literature" using lists from a Christian homeschooling publisher and a 1990 encyclopedia, meaning anything published in the last 35 years is presumptively suspect. The bill's definition of "sexually oriented material" is vague enough to swallow entire curricula, and it explicitly targets content related to gender dysphoria and transgender people. That's not child protection — that's erasure. The party that claims to champion local control of education is now dictating from Washington which books belong in classrooms.
Students deserve to learn about the full range of human experience. Voting yes on any of these bills sends a clear message that some kids' lives are too controversial to acknowledge. I expect you to oppose S. 4925 in the HELP subcommittee and to go on record against this entire legislative package.
