I am a strong supporter of the Peace Corps, and the historical significance the agency and the nearly 250,000 volunteers have made since 1961.
As a congressional leader of the upcoming America 250 celebrations, I ask you to introduce legislation to honor the Peace Corps with a Congressional Gold Medal.
2026 is not only the 250th anniversary of our nation. 2026 will also mark the 65th anniversary of the Peace Corps. This would truly be a nationwide recognition, as Returned Peace Corps Volunteers (RPCVs) can be found in every state and congressional district. And, as many RPCVs who served in the 1960's are now well into their 80's, this is the time to honor their service.
This initiative is supported by the National Peace Corps Association (NPCA), the non-profit, non-governmental, mission driven alumni organization of the Peace Corps community. As noted in NPCA's endorsement, "The Congressional Gold Medal is a fitting tribute to Volunteers' invaluable contributions, recognizing the ingenuity, dedication, and sacrifices of those who answered the call to serve our nation and foreign communities. This medal will honor the achievements of past and present Volunteers and reaffirm the Peace Corps' ongoing mission to build a more interconnected, peaceful, and prosperous world"
If you are willing to introduce this legislation or need more information - including a draft of possible legislation, please contact NPCA at advocacy@peacecorpsconnect.org.
