I am writing to urge you, in the strongest possible terms, to break from the standard routines of legislative business in light of the unprecedented actions taken by former President Trump. His newly announced tariffs—sweeping, economically destabilizing, and issued without congressional consent—are just the latest example of escalating executive overreach that threatens the balance of power, the rule of law, and the wellbeing of everyday Americans.
These are not normal times, and yet Congress continues to operate as if they are. That is unacceptable. I urge you to do more than issue statements or pursue business-as-usual legislation. We need an active, visible protest and a coordinated response that reflects the seriousness of this crisis.
Specifically, I call on you to:
• Organize or join public protest within Congress itself—through coordinated walkouts, floor speeches, or procedural holds—to draw attention to this abuse of power.
• Refuse to advance unrelated legislation until the issue of unchecked tariff authority is meaningfully addressed.
• Pressure leadership to prioritize bills like the Bicameral Congressional Trade Authority Act and bring them to a vote immediately.
• Rally your colleagues—across party lines if possible—to demand accountability and a return to constitutional norms.
This moment demands political courage and disruption of the status quo. Quiet dissent or routine votes are no longer sufficient. You were elected not just to pass legislation, but to defend democracy and the institutions that uphold it. I ask you to act accordingly, now.
