I am writing to express my deep concern regarding recent actions taken by the Trump Administration impacting vital institutions dedicated to knowledge and public service. Specifically, I am alarmed by the ongoing effort to undermine the Library of Congress, beginning with the dismissal of Dr. Carla Hayden and now extending to potential action against the head of the U.S. Copyright Office in response to a report on artificial intelligence and copyright.
This pattern follows the unwarranted termination of the National Archivist earlier this year, and the attempt to dismantle the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). These actions represent a troubling trend of political interference within longstanding, nonpartisan agencies that serve a critical role in our nation.
The Library of Congress and its affiliated offices – including the Copyright Office, the Congressional Research Service, and the Law Library of Congress – are far more than just a repository of books. These offices provide essential, impartial support to our government and the public. The Copyright Office safeguards the rights of creators and protects the integrity of the public domain. The Congressional Research Service delivers confidential, unbiased analysis to Congress, informing both legislation and oversight. The Law Library provides access to global legal resources for lawmakers and the judiciary. Politicizing the Librarian of Congress’s role puts these critical functions at risk, potentially compromising their independence and diminishing their ability to serve our democracy.
I urge you to advocate for the preservation of these vital institutions and to resist any actions that would compromise their integrity and nonpartisan character.
I appreciate your attention to this important matter and look forward to hearing your perspective on how we can ensure the continued independence and effectiveness of these essential agencies.
