Reject public lands auction, preserve national recreation heritage

To: Sen. Ernst, Sen. Grassley, Rep. Nunn

From: A constituent in Des Moines, IA

June 21

The Senate's brazen proposal to auction off up to 3.3 million acres of America's cherished public lands is an unconscionable attack on our natural heritage. These are lands that belong to all citizens, providing unparalleled outdoor recreation opportunities invaluable to local economies and public wellbeing. Outdoor Alliance's damning map lays bare the staggering scale of this giveaway – nearly 300 million acres, encompassing nearly 100,000 miles of trails, over 45,000 climbing areas, and 3,405 river miles across the West could soon be sold to the highest bidder. Enabling the fire sale of landscapes revered for hiking, camping, climbing, paddling and more would rob current and future generations of irreplaceable wildernesses that foster physical and mental health. Our public lands define the American spirit of open spaces – they must be staunchly defended against private exploitation, not surrendered to corporate profiteering. I vehemently urge you to reject any legislation enabling this senseless pillaging of our national commons in favor of upholding our proud conservation legacy for the benefit of all people.
