Support due process and the judicial system

To: Sen. Baldwin, Rep. Fitzgerald, Sen. Johnson

From: A constituent in Waukesha, WI

April 30

I am a mother of two school-age children, a teacher, and a proud member of my community in Waukesha, Wisconsin. I support due process and our justice system. I am deeply concerned about the lack of due process taking place across our country, especially as it relates to college students and immigrants. The pace of arrests, deportations, and more are not allowing for due process to take place. Mistakes have been confirmed and appear to be growing in number. Due process is not something small that can be set aside lightly. It is a way to give a pause to allow for evidence and judicial process. It is a right we are proud to have in our country. If it can be so easily swept away for some people, it can be gradually swept away for more and more people. I also am hearing many attacks on our judges and system of law in general, mostly by the president and those in his executive branch. Any case or judge who either disagrees with a decision of the executive branch or wishes to examine the law further is attacked and demeaned. This is unacceptable, as they are following our proper system of checks and balances. They are following the law and doing their job as designed, to ensure the government is following the law. The executive branch is not above the law but a part of it. Our founding leaders clearly established checks on the executive branch, fearing the rise of another authoritarian leader such as the king we just left. Our legal system is not perfect, but it plays a significant role in maintaining our democracy and the rights of people in America. Please speak up to support our judiciary and everyone's right to due process.
