Constitutional duty above political calculation! Our Democracy depends on it.

As a constituent and very concerned American, I write to strongly urge you to fulfill your constitutional duty of oversight by carefully examining and, where warranted, pursuing impeachment proceedings in response to repeated instances in which President Donald J. Trump has overstepped the bounds of presidential authority. First, it is a matter of public record that Mr. Trump was found guilty in a New York court on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records. While these charges relate to conduct prior to his presidency, they establish a documented pattern of disregard for legal and ethical norms that is relevant when assessing his exercise of executive power. More critically, during his presidency, Mr. Trump repeatedly tested—and in some cases exceeded—the limits of constitutional authority: - Interference with Law Enforcement and the Justice System: The Special Counsel investigation documented multiple instances in which Mr. Trump attempted to influence or curtail investigations into his own conduct, including efforts to remove the Special Counsel and direct witnesses. While not prosecuted due to Department of Justice policy at the time, these actions raised substantial concerns about obstruction of justice. - Use of Presidential Power for Personal Political Gain: The Government Accountability Office concluded that the withholding of congressionally approved military aid to Ukraine violated the Impoundment Control Act. This action was tied to requests that a foreign government announce investigations into a domestic political rival, forming the basis of his first impeachment. - Circumvention of Congressional Authority: Mr. Trump repeatedly declared national emergencies to redirect funds appropriated by Congress, most notably for border wall construction, raising constitutional concerns regarding the separation of powers and Congress’s exclusive authority over federal spending. - Misuse of the Pardon Power: While constitutionally broad, Mr. Trump’s use of clemency in cases involving political allies and individuals connected to investigations into his administration raised serious ethical questions about whether the power was exercised to shield associates and undermine accountability. - Undermining Electoral Integrity: Following the 2020 election, Mr. Trump engaged in sustained efforts to challenge and overturn certified results, including pressuring state officials to “find” votes and encouraging alternate slates of electors. These actions culminated in the events of January 6, 2021, which disrupted the peaceful transfer of power—one of the core tenets of American democracy. - Expansion of Executive Authority Without Precedent: Across multiple domains, Mr. Trump asserted expansive interpretations of executive privilege and immunity, often resisting subpoenas and oversight in ways that courts repeatedly had to adjudicate. Individually, each of these actions raises serious constitutional concerns. Collectively, they reflect a pattern of conduct that challenges the system of checks and balances fundamental to our republic. Impeachment is not solely a response to criminal conduct; it is a constitutional mechanism designed to address abuses of power and protect democratic institutions. Failure to act in the face of such patterns risks normalizing executive overreach for future administrations of any party. I strongly urge you to place constitutional duty above political calculation. The preservation of our democracy, founded by our forefathers for 250 years, depends on it.
