No Kings, No Dictators — Congress Must Rein In the Insurrection Act

To: Sen. Ernst, Sen. Grassley, Rep. Nunn

From: A constituent in Des Moines, IA

October 22

Donald Trump’s continued threats to invoke the Insurrection Act against Americans, his false claims about violence at the No Kings protests, and his labeling of political opponents as “terrorists” show a deliberate contempt for democracy. After years of ignoring the checks and balances of our republic, his intent is unmistakable: to turn government power against the people. Allowing a president to weaponize the military or law enforcement for personal or political ends would destroy the very freedoms this nation defends. I urge you to act immediately to: 1. Restrict the Insurrection Act to its original, narrow purpose—never as a tool against lawful protest. 2. Establish oversight and transparency before any domestic military deployment. 3. Condemn publicly the use of fear and falsehood to silence dissent. This is a defining moment. Democracy depends on Congress standing between ambition and abuse. Please act to ensure that no leader—now or in the future—can rule the American people by force.
