An Open Letter

To: Sen. Barrasso, Sen. Lummis, Rep. Hageman

From: A constituent in Jackson, WY

March 1

I am writing to you today as a constituent deeply concerned by the Trump administration’s recent military escalation in Iran. For years, the President and his closest advisors campaigned on a platform of non-interventionism, promising Wyoming families that our sons and daughters would not be sent into "pointless" foreign wars. The current transition into active conflict—specifically "Operation Epic Fury"—represents a staggering departure from those explicit promises. The record of these prior commitments is clear and undeniable: • President Donald Trump: On November 16, 2011, Mr. Trump predicted that a president would attack Iran simply to get elected, calling it "pathetic" and a "sad thing." As recently as 2024, he stated, "You’re not going to have a war with me... I don't want to see wars... it's so unnecessary, so costly in terms of lives and money." • Vice President JD Vance: In 2024, then-Senator Vance stated, "Our interest I think very much is in not going to war with Iran... It would be a huge distraction of resources." • Secretary of State Nikki Haley: During the 2024 campaign, she assured voters, "I am confident that his first task will be to do the work to walk us back from the brink of war. We cannot be prosperous unless we are at peace." • Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth: Just months ago, he insisted the "War Department will not be distracted by democracy building interventionism, undefined wars, [or] regime change." Even prominent supporters like Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene have noted this betrayal, stating, "We said no more foreign wars, no more regime change... Trump, Vance, basically the entire admin campaigned on it." Wyoming has always stood for principles and the value of a person’s word. To campaign as the "peace president" only to initiate a war once in power is the definition of political hypocrisy. It places an impossible burden on our service members and their families who believed the era of nation-building and Middle Eastern intervention was over. As my representatives in Washington, I urge you to demand transparency from this administration. We deserve to know why the "America First" policy of peace has been so quickly discarded in favor of the very "endless wars" the President once spent years condemning.
