Urgent Action Needed: Resolve Shutdown and Protect NASA's Long-Term Future

To: Sen. Padilla, Sen. Schiff, Rep. Chu

From: A constituent in Pasadena, CA

October 28, 2025

I am writing to express my deep concern about the ongoing government shutdown and its severe impact on NASA's operations and future. It has now been a month since the shutdown began, and the consequences for our nation's space agency are becoming increasingly dire. The current shutdown, coupled with the Office of Management and Budget's directive to prepare for permanent reductions in force (RIFs), poses an existential threat to NASA's ability to maintain its position as a global leader in space exploration and scientific discovery. This situation is further exacerbated by the proposed FY26 President's Budget Request, which includes a 25% overall funding reduction for NASA and a staggering 47% decrease in science mission funding. The nature of NASA's work demands long-term planning and consistent funding. Many missions require years or even decades to develop and execute. The yearly funding model, combined with the unpredictability of government shutdowns, severely hampers NASA's ability to plan and implement these crucial projects effectively. I urge you to take immediate action on several fronts: First, work tirelessly across party lines to end this shutdown immediately. Every day that passes causes more damage to NASA's ongoing projects and future plans. Second, once the government reopens, reject the proposed cuts to NASA's budget. Instead, advocate for robust, stable funding that allows for long-term planning and execution of vital space and science missions. Third, explore and support legislative measures to shield NASA from future shutdowns. This could include automatic continuing resolutions specifically for NASA or multi-year appropriations that provide the agency with the stability it needs to operate effectively. Lastly, champion initiatives that enable NASA to engage in long-term planning and funding cycles. The current yearly budget process is fundamentally at odds with the timescales required for space exploration and scientific research. The impact of a strong NASA extends far beyond scientific discovery. It drives innovation, inspires future generations of scientists and engineers, and significantly contributes to our economy and national security. We cannot allow short-term political disputes to undermine this vital institution and jeopardize decades of progress. I implore you to act swiftly and decisively to resolve the current shutdown, protect NASA's budget, and implement measures to ensure its long-term stability. Our nation's scientific legacy, technological leadership, and future in space exploration depend on your immediate action.
