I am writing as your constituent to urge immediate legislative action to protect speech and dissent, especially in light of increasing government threats to suppress or criminalize political opposition.
Recent developments—including statements that the current administration may use “law enforcement” to police “civil speech” and proposals for legislation like the No Political Enemies (Nope) Act and the Free Speech Protection Act (S.188)—signal that the First Amendment is at risk. These proposals are steps in the right direction, but lawmaking must follow through with clarity, enforcement, and protections for all.
I request that you:
1. Support or co‑sponsor the Nope Act and S.188 to provide statutory protections against politically motivated suppression of speech.
2. Introduce companion legislation if these bills stall, ensuring protections are codified and not left to executive orders alone.
3. Call for oversight hearings in Congress to investigate attempts by any branch of government to use police, regulatory pressure, or other means to silence critics, whether in media, academia, or civil society.
4. Ensure due process protections for anyone accused of violating unclear “civility” or “extremism” standards — speech protections must include legal safeguards against arbitrary enforcement.
5. Make public statements affirming that criticism, dissent, and free political speech are not just permitted but essential to democratic accountability.
Words without legal guardrails are insufficient. We need laws that prevent abuse of power over speech — now. Would you please share your stance on these bills and any plans you have to protect free expression?
Thank you for protecting the democracy we share.
