Bring him home!

To: Rep. Baird, Sen. Young, Sen. Banks

From: A constituent in Monticello, IN

April 15

I am writing to express my deep anger and profound frustration with the actions of the current presidential administration. What has taken place is not only morally reprehensible, it is a direct assault on the fundamental values of due process and justice that this nation is supposed to uphold. A man who was legally present in the United States, married to a U.S. citizen, was deported—wrongfully and outrageously—to a prison in El Salvador. Despite his legal status and constitutional rights, this administration forcibly removed him and has since refused to take the necessary steps to correct this grievous abuse. Even more appalling is their refusal to comply with a unanimous decision by the Supreme Court that ordered his return and affirmed his right to due process. This is not a political issue. This is a human rights issue. When the executive branch openly defies the highest court in the land, it undermines the rule of law, the separation of powers, and the legitimacy of our entire system of government. No administration should be allowed to act with such impunity. I urge you, as elected officials of this state, to condemn this unlawful deportation and call upon the federal government to immediately comply with the Supreme Court’s ruling and facilitate this man’s return to the United States. Your voices matter. Silence in the face of injustice is complicity. Please take a public stand. Use your platforms to defend the rule of law and human dignity. If our system of government is to have any credibility, actions like this must be met with accountability and reform.
