Block Trump's Illegal Dismantling of Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante

To: Gov. Cox, Sen. Harper, Rep. Dunnigan, Sen. Curtis, Sen. Lee, Rep. Owens, Pres. Trump

From: A verified voter in West Jordan, UT

July 13

Block any executive action to shrink Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante national monuments. These lands are sacred — irreplaceable, un-monetized, and shrinking. Handing them over to extractive industries at Trump's illegal behest is desecration, plain and simple. The Antiquities Act does not give presidents the power to strip protections away, and Trump's 2017 rollbacks — already the largest in American history — are still being challenged in federal court as unlawful. The public has spoken. When the administration solicited comments in 2017, 98% of 2.8 million responses demanded the monuments stay intact. A 2024 poll found 71% of Utah voters want Bears Ears protected and 74% want Grand Staircase-Escalante preserved, including Republican majorities. Bears Ears exists because five sovereign Tribal nations asked for that protection. Letting drilling and mining interests befoul and ruin what little open space we have left is a betrayal of those nations and every person who values this land. Use every tool available to stop Interior Secretary Doug Burgum and the Trump administration from destroying monuments that belong to all of us.
