Come to your senses - Appose Cuts to Medicaid and SNAP

To: Sen. Lummis, Sen. Barrasso, Rep. Hageman

From: A constituent in Albin, WY

February 27

I am extremely disappointed in you and every Republican member of Congress who voted for—or intends to support—cutting SNAP, Medicaid and other important programs that hardworking Americans rely on. We pay a large percentage of our income in taxes and get hardly anything to show for it. Now you want to deprive us of access to affordable healthcare and groceries for our children to line the already fat pockets of billionaires, oligarchs, & wealthy corporations. As a small business owner who was hit hard by the pandemic and other hardships in recent years, I rely on Medicaid and SNAP to survive when life hits with unexpected twists. I’ve had health crisis after health crisis in the last several years that not only kept me from working for months at a time, but would also have killed me without adequate access to affordable healthcare. I would not still be alive today if it weren’t for both SNAP and Medicaid. I pay up to 30% or more of my income in taxes due to the high burden of self employment tax. I work hard and I deserve to benefit from the way my tax dollars are spent. I do not benefit from extended 2017 tax cuts for the wealthy that place my tax dollars directly into the pockets of oligarchs, billionaires and wealthy corporations who seek to drain hardworking Americans of every last penny before leaving us to suffer and die of preventable illness and malnourishment. I do not benefit from mass deportation and for-profit detention centers targeting my hardworking, law-abiding friends and neighbors, or an ineffective border wall. These unnecessary and wasteful policies will cost families $968 billion over a decade and drive-up prices for all Americans (Pew Research Center, Peterson Institute for International Economics). Moreover they will cause mass suffering for the profit of a few. I am beyond disgusted that H.Con.Res.14 passed the House and not a single one of you had the spine to stand up for very the people you claim to represent. You sold us out. This budget resolution, meant to take health care and food assistance away from your constituents (H.Con.Res.14), is a travesty. I’m ashamed to be represented by you who continue to support it. Please, hear the voices or your constituents and do the right thing. Do not take these programs away from the hard working Americans who need them to feed their families, care for their health, and make ends meet. Medicaid covers more than 70 million people in this country, including 2 of every 5 U.S. births. SNAP supports 40 million people in putting food on the table. I believe in fiscal responsibility. Taking health care & nutrition assistance away from the very Americans whose hard earned tax dollars pay for these programs offers no benefit to the American people but only causes harm & destruction. This budget is NOT fiscally responsible. I urge you to come to your sense. Protect Medicaid and SNAP in any upcoming budget and reject mass deportation in the reconciliation bill.
