Rubio’s attacks on ICC are an admission of human rights violations

July 13

The escalating rhetoric of the Trump regime and Marco Rubio specifically threatening the International Criminal Court are an attack on international law and order—-as well as an admission that they know they have engaged in impermissible violations of international law. This administration has attacked its own citizens when they have engaged in protected first amendment speech and protest and has attacked sitting senators and representatives for reminding our service members of their duty to refuse unlawful orders as outlined in the Uniform Code of Military Justice, as you well know. Now this administration is escalating their attacks against the international community broadly, targeting those who hold war criminals and dictators accountable without fear or favor, believing themselves above all laws domestic and international. This must end here. Our service members are safer when their leaders—-uniformed and civilian—-respect international law and our own Military Code of Justice. Our women and men in uniform are best protected from ICC sanctions by ethical and legal engagements directed by senior officers who respect their oaths and civilian leadership who operate within the established international and domestic law. These are uncontroversial statements. Congress must reaffirm our commitment to our partners in the international community, our firm adherence to governance through law and order—not fiat, and our awareness that no amount of might or economic power forces unique rules for one country alone. Congress must demonstrate our accountability within the international community.
